Neither of them spoke as they drove through the desert, the car bouncing along the rough roads. Miko should not have pointed the gun at Frank. He stared out the window. His best friend was dead, and Nasir would soon be too. But through it all there was one sliver of virtue, one discovery that kept Miko's spirits from completely falling: Frank's scarred hand. And his boyfriend.

“Did you know that Frank was with a man?”

“I did not.”

“He is,” Miko said, sitting back in his seat and finding himself smiling.

“They are not your friends, Miko.”

“I know this.”

“I don't think you do. There is a reason our people do not socialize with each other. It is the same reason Silva prohibited the men from killing each other. Because that's exactly what they would do.”

“His boyfriend has white hair like a bunny rabbit.”

Nasir sighed and shook his head. “I think you had better keep that comment to yourself.”

Miko smiled again. “Frank will be there.”

“It will likely be Frank that kills us.”

That took the smile from his face.

“Bella stole my bunny ears.”

Miko had warned him that she would steal everything when she visited the factory, but he was thinking more about guns and bullets and possibly the machines if she could somehow move them. He hadn't even considered that she would steal Nasir's personal belongings. Especially not his bunny ears. “I am sorry, Nas,” Miko said. And he really was.
